Natha's Prayer

This hymn is often sung in all Nath temples and mathas, after arati or at the end of religious events. It may differ slightly in different mathas, but in general, all versions are similar in their main content.

gaṁge hara narmade hara jaṭā śaṇkara hara oṁ namo pārvatīpataye hara boliye śrī śambhujatī guru gorakṣanātha jī mahārāja kī jaya | māyā svarūpī dādā matsyendranātha jī mahārāja kī jaya | navanātha caurāsī siddhoṁ kī jaya | bheś bhagavān kī jaya | aṭala kṣetra kī jaya | ramateśvara mahārāja kī jaya | kadalī kāla bhairavanātha jī maharaja kī jaya | pātra devatā bhagavān kī jaya | jvālā mahāmāī kī jaya | sanātana dharma kī jaya | apne apne guru mahārāja kī jaya | gau brāhmaṇ kī jaya | bol sānce darbār ki jaya | hara hara mahādeva kī jaya | hari oṁ ||

Reverence to the rivers Narmada and Ganges in Shiva's twisted hair! Glory to Him who is Parvati's husband! Glory to Shri Shambhujati Guru Gorakshanathaji Maharaj! Glory to Mayasvarupa Dada-guru Matsyendranathji Maharaja! Glory to the nine Nathas and the eighty-four Siddhas. Glory to the Lord of asceticism! Glory to Atalkshetra (the eternal dimension), Glory to Ramateshvar Maharaj (the wandering master). Glory to Kadali Kala Bhairavanath (Bhairava, the symbol of power over time). Glory to the incarnate Deity! Glory to Jvala Mahamaya! Glory to Sanatana Dharma (eternal law)! Glory to our Guru Maharaj! Glory to the cows (the light of Parabrahman) and brahmins! Glory to the True Darabar (lord)! Glory to Great Shiva Mahadev!

karpūra gauraṁ karuṇāvatāraṁ saṁsārasāraṁ bhujagendrahāram | sadā vasantaṁ hṛdayāravinde bhavaṁ bhavānī sahitaṁ namāmi || mandāramālā kalinātha kāyai kapālamālo kitakantharāya | namaḥ śivāya ca namaḥ śivāya namaḥ śivāya ca namaḥ śivāya ||

Whose body is like white camphor, who is the embodiment of compassion Possessing the essence of the universe, who is adorned with a garland of snakes. Who always lives in the lotus of the heart, I bow to You and Your consort Bhavani. Reverence to Kalinath (who grants liberation in Kaliyuga), who holds a garland of flowers (mandara). Reverence to Kanthar (Shiva), adorned with a garland of skulls. Bow to Shiva and once again bow to Shiva. Bow to Shiva and once again bow to Shiva.


gorakṣabālaṁ guruśiṣyapālam śeṣaṁ himālayaṁ śaśīkhaṇḍabhālam | kālasya kālaṁ jitajanmajālam vande jaṭālaṁ jagadabjanālam ||

Both the Guru and the disciple are protected by the power of Gorakshanath. Who sits on the top of the Himalayas, and on the top of his head is a crescent. Who is death for death itself, who has triumphed over the cycle of birth and death, who wears tangled hair and is the source of all creation.


gurur brahmā gurur viṣṇur gurur devo maheśvaraḥ | guru sākṣātparaṁ brahma tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ || dhyānamūlaṁ gurormūrtiḥ pūjāmūlaṁ gurupadam | mantramūlaṁ guruvākyaṁ mokṣamūlaṁ gurukṛpā || mantra satyaṁ pūjā satyaṁ satyaṁ devaṁ nirañjanam | guru vākyaṁ sadā satyaṁ satyamekaṁ paraṁ padam ||

Guru is Brahma, Guru is Vishnu, Guru is Lord Maheshvara. The Guru is the Visible Brahman, the worship to that Guru. Guru's face is the basis of meditation, the basis of worship is Guru's feet, Guru's speech is the basis of mantra, the basis of moksha is Guru's Grace. Mantra is truth, puja is truth, the true deity is Niranjan (spotlessness). Guru's speech is always true, (Guru's teaching) is the only supreme abode.


tvameva mātā ca pitā tvameva tvameva bandhuśca sakhā tvameva | tvameva vidyā draviṇaṁ tvameva | tvameva sarvaṁ mama deva deva ||

You are truly a mother and You are a father, truly You are a friend and You are a brother, truly You are knowledge and You are wealth, truly You are always my God of all Gods.


ākāśāya tāḍakā liṅgaṁ pātāle vaṭukeśvaram | mṛtyuloke mahākālaṁ sarvaliṅgaṁ namo'stu te || śelī śṛṅgī śirajaṭā jholī bhagavāṁ bheṣa || kānana kuṇḍala bhasma lasaiṁ śivagorakṣa ādeś || oṁkār terā ādhār tīn lok meṁ jay – jay kāra | nāda bāje kāl bhāge jñān kī ṭopī gorakha sāje || gale nāda puṣpan kī mālā rakṣā kare śrī | śambhujatī guru gorakṣanātha jī mahārāj bālā || cār khāṇī cār vāṇī candra sūrya pavan pāṇī | eko devā sarvatra sevā jot pāṭa le paramo devā || kānana kuṇḍala gale nāda karo siddho nādoṁkāra | siddhoṁ guruvaroṁ ko ādeś | ādeś | ādeś ||

Reverence to Taraka lingam (radiant source of all creation and liberation) in heaven, under the earth Vatukeshvara lingam (known in the Puranas as Hatakeshvara Lingam), on earth reverence to Mahakala lingam. Let there be reverence to all those lingams. Reverence to Shiva Gorakshanath, who wears the sacred thread with a whistle, earrings, who has tangled hair and a jholi (sadhu's bag), and whose body is smeared with sacred ashes. Omkara is Your basis [O Gorakshanath!], You are glorified in the three worlds. When the sound of nada sounds, then death (time) disappears, Gorakshanath is a witness (of this) Truth. On him there is a garland of flowers (chakras), making the sounds of nada. Protect us glorified manifestation of goodness, Master Shiva Gorakshnath ji Maharaj, with your strength. One who is in the four types of speech (vaikhari, madhyama, pashyanti, para), in the four forms of birth (andaja, jarayuja, udbhija, svedaja), in the moon, in the sun, in the wind and water. One God, who illuminates everything everywhere, the revered Supreme God. Wearing earrings in the ears (the strength of the two main poles), the vibration of nada comes from You, O Guru, make us all perfect with your grace! Adesh, Adesh!
