Decoding The Dhyana Shloka of Mahaganapati

Mahaganapati is the form of Ganesha as the supreme being, especially in the Ganapatya sect. Mahaganapati is one of the primary devatas worshipped in the Sri Vidya tradition as well as other vedic and tantric traditions as well. In this article, I want to explain about the various aspects of Mahaganapati's form and the internal as well as external symbolism.

Dhyana Shloka

bījāpūra gadekṣu kārmukarujā cakrābja pāśotpala vrīhyagra svaviṣāṇa ratna kalaśa prodyat karāmbhoruhaḥ |
dhyeyo vallabhayā  sapadmakarayā śliṣṭojjvaladbhūṣayā viśvotpatti vipatti saṁsthitikaro vigneśa iṣṭārthadaḥ ||

I worship Ganesha holding with 10 hands: a pomegranate, a club, a sugarcane bone, a striking sickle, a lotus, a blue flower, rice shoots, his own tusk, a jug of jewelry, in a raised trunk in front of him - a lotus. I meditate on him who being in the arms of his beloved with a lotus in hand and a flaming ornament, accomplishes the creation, destruction, and maintenance of the Universe. He is the Lord of the Vighnas, the bestower of desired benefits.

When we meditate on Mahaganapati and worship him, we ask Mahaganapati to remove the obstacles on our spiritual path and drive our senses inwards towards the Sushumna nadi. Mahaganapati removes the obstacles that we may encounter during the worship of other Devatas as well. The obstacles in our spiritual path are our own past karmas that keep our mind trapped. We hold onto emotions from past situations within our subtle body and we become slaves to the cycles of our karmas. We develop fears, anxiety, anger, sadness, depression, and various other emotional states due to our past traumas. When we meditate on Mahaganapati, we ask him to keep us on the spiritual path, bring us spiritual wisdom and bliss, eliminate our internal enemies, and lead us to the highest realization of Parabrahman. He also grants us the one-pointed concentration that we require in the deep states of Dhyana and Samadhi. Mahaganapati is a symbol of Purnata, or the fullness of Shakti, whereas Gorakhnath is a symbol of Shunyata, which is emptiness.
