आप्सर, āpsara

“semi-divine beings”, “heavenly nymphs and dancers”

Ramayana” mentions that  apsaras arose when gods and asuras were churning the ocean, neither of them wanted to take them as wives and as a result apsaras belonged to everyone. According to other legends, the most famous apsaras (such as Menaka, Urvashi, Tilottama, etc.) were created by Brahma, and the rest were the daughters of Daksha.
