Anjali-mudra

Anjali-mudra

अञ्जलि-मुद्रा, añjali-mudrā

"gesture of palms joined in reverence";
also called "pranama-anjali" ("prayer gesture")

A gesture expressing respect, supplication or request, as well as a greeting in which the palms are folded together and the fingers are turned upwards. Often the performance of anjali-mudra is accompanied by pronunciation of the word "namaskara" ("bow, reverence"). Performing anjali-mudra at chest level is customary to greet equals, at the level of the “third eye” – Guru, and above the top of the head – God.
