Arya-puggala

Arya-puggala

Arya-puggala (Pali "noble person") – according to the Pali Canon, 4 types of noble personalities can be distinguished, they also correspond to the four levels of holiness that the student goes through on the path to enlightenment:

  1. Sotapanna (Pali "the one who entered the stream") – a student who has entered the stream to enlightenment will be released in a maximum of 7 lives. Never again can he be born in hell, the world of hungry ghosts and animals. He is liberated from 3 of the 10 shackles (samyodjana) that bind to samsara: from views of the self (atta), doubts about what is good and what is unwholesome, and clinging to rules and regulations (the belief that they can purify a person).

  2. Sakadagamin (Pali "once returning") – a student who once again left to be born in the world (human or dev – deity). In addition to the previous 3 shackles, greatly weakened the thirst and anger.

  3. Anagamin (Pali "non-returner") – a student who has completely got rid of sensual thirst and anger. He will be born only in "pure abodes" (the highest level of the world) and there he will achieve final liberation. He still retains a desire for subtle modes of existence and a sense of "self."

  4. Arhat – completely eradicated all kinds of thirst and the feeling of "self". Never be born again in any of the worlds.
