Shabar

Shabar

Shabar, Shabari, Sabara is the name of an ancient forest tribe, mentioned in various Hindu scripts, including the Mahabharata. Nowadays, tribes that speak Munda languages and call themselves Shabara, Shavara, Shaor, Shaora, Saora or Shura, according to Indian law, belong to the adivasi category ("primitive", or aborigines).

There is an opinion that etymologically the word shabar or sabar could come from the name of the river Sabarmati that is located in the eastern part of Gujarat in India.
