Atindriya

Atindriya

अतीन्द्रिय, atīndriya

The term is formed by adding the prefix ati ("beyond", "extraordinary / unusual") to the word indriya (“perceptual organ/faculty”, “sense”). This is something elusive, inaccessible to the senses, also: the highest feeling; that, which is beyond ordinary sensory perception. Sometimes this term is used to define Atman

Atindriya is also used to describe the One who is "beyond the perception of the senses", i.e. the Supreme Reality, Shiva.

According to "Shivapurana" ("Rudra-samhita", chapter 15):

“[...] Upon arriving there, after paying respects to Lord [Shiva] with great excitement, we glorified Him with various hymns, folding our palms in reverence. The Devas said: [...] O lord of all, we bow to Thee who are beyond the perception of the senses (atīndriya); who does not have support; who supports everyone; who has no reason; who are infinite; original and subtle”.
