Chetana can act as a synonym for citta when describing the fivefold structure of antahkaran.

In Hinduism it is also used to describe various states of a person: wakefulness is referred to as cetana (consciousness), sleep as avacetana अवचेतना (subconscious), deep sleep as acetana अचेतना (unconscious), and the fourth state (turya) is explained as urdhvacetana ऊर्ध्वचेतना (superconsciousness).
