Amaroli

अमरोली, amarolīalso अमरोली-क्रिया, amarolī-kriyā, also अमरोली-मुद्रा, amarolī-mudrā 

There are two variations of this practice amaroli:

  • the first comes from the Kapalikas’ tradition and means using the middle part of the jet of one's own urine for ingestion or rubbing into the body.

  • the second option is identical to Vajroli-kriya, it consists in retracting (or raising) the seminal fluid upwards at the end of sexual intercourse. However, the description should not be taken literally here – it is about controlling apana (and bindu – the seed in a subtle form) and raising it up, which implies the transformation of sexual energy into ojas.

The treatise “Hatha-yoga Pradipika” (Part 3) gives the following description of Amaroli practice:

अथ अमरोली
पित्तोल्बणत्वात्प्रथमाम्बु-धारां विहाय निःसारतयान्त्यधाराम |
निष्हेव्यते शीतल-मध्य-धारा कापालिके खण्डमते|अमरोली || ९६ ||

atha amarolī
pittolbaṇatvātprathamāmbu-dhārāṃ vihāya niḥsāratayāntyadhārām |
niṣevyate śītala-madhya-dhārā kāpālike khaṇḍamate|amarolī || 96 ||

According to Kapalikas’  teaching, Amaroli is the drinking of the middle part of a portion of urine. The first part of the urine is discarded because it contains bile, and the last part – because it is useless.

अमरीं यः पिबेन्नित्यं नस्यं कुर्वन्दिने दिने |
वज्रोलीमभ्यसेत्सम्यक्सामरोलीति कथ्यते || ९७ ||

amarīṃ yaḥ pibennityaṃ nasyaṃ kurvandine dine |
vajrolīmabhyasetsamyaksāmarolīti kathyate || 97 ||

One who drinks Amari daily, inhales it and practices Vajroli, is called an Amaroli practitioner.

अभ्यासान्निःसॄतां छान्द्रीं विभूत्या सह मिश्रयेत |
धारयेदुत्तमाङ्गेष्हु दिव्य-दॄष्ह्टिः परजायते || ९८ ||

abhyāsānniḥsṝtāṃ chāndrīṃ vibhūtyā saha miśrayet |
dhārayeduttamānggheṣu divya-dṝṣṭiḥ prajāyate || 98 ||

The seed (bindu) emitted in the practice of Vajroli must be mixed with the ashes of the burnt dung, and rubbing it in the upper parts of the body gives divine sight (divya-drishti).

The description of the Amaroli practice described in “Shiva Samhita” is different:

सहजोल्यमरोली च वज्रोल्या भेदतो भवेत् ॥
येन केन प्रकारेण बिन्दुं योगी प्रधारयेत् ॥९५॥

sahajolyamarolī ca vajrolyā bhedato bhavet ||
yena kena prakāreṇa binduṃ yogī pradhārayet ||95||

There are differences (bheda) between Sahajoli, Amaroli and Vajroli, [although] by any of these methods yogi retains bindu. (95)

दैवाच्चलति चेद्वेगे मेलनं चन्द्रसूर्ययोः ॥
अमरोलिरियं प्रोक्ता लिंगनालेन शोषयेत् ॥ ९६॥

daivāccalati cedvege melanaṃ candrasūryayoḥ ||
amaroliriyaṃ proktā liṃganālena śoṣayet || 96||

If in the process of [sexual] arousal [seed] is spontaneously emitted and the moon unites with the sun, then [this] mixture should be drained (the mixed sexual secretions should be absorbed back) through the urethra – [this] is called Amaroli. (96)

गतंबिन्दुं स्वकं योगी बन्धयेद्योनिमुद्रया ॥
सहजोलिरियं प्रोक्ता सर्वतन्त्रेषु गोपिता ॥ ९७॥

gataṃbinduṃ svakaṃ yogī bandhayedyonimudrayā ||
sahajoliriyaṃ proktā sarvatantreṣu gopitā || 97||

[When] yogi holds bindu within himself through yoni-mudra, [this] is called Sahajoli, kept secret in all Tantras. (97)

संज्ञाभेदाद्भवेद्भेदः कार्यं तुल्यगतिर्यदि ॥
तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन साध्यते योगिभिः सदा ॥ ९८॥

saṃjñābhedādbhavedbhedaḥ kāryaṃ tulyagatiryadi ||
tasmātsarvaprayatnena sādhyate yogibhiḥ sadā || 98||

Since [these] different methods give the same result, they are all equally practiced by yogis always with special diligence. (98)
