Aparadha

Aparadha

अपराध, aparādha

The word "aparadha" comes from the root राध् 'radh', which turns into राध 'radha', which means "benevolence", "help", "mindfulness", "careful attitude", "to be similar", etc. Further, the prefix अप 'apa' gives the meaning "in the opposite direction", "down", "without", so we get the meaning of the word aparadha – something that goes against mutual understanding, resonance, careful and attentive relations, mutual favor and satisfaction.

In a broad sense, aparadha is interpreted as an insult to the Deities or Gurus, teachings, sacred texts or places. Committing aparadhas, especially to the Guru, leads to spiritual downfall. Sacred texts usually cite the most common types of aparadhas and the consequences of such offenses for those who commit them. Disciples are instructed to cut off contact with those who offend or disrespect their teacher, practice, tradition. Neglect of the Guru's instructions is also considered aparadha.

For example, in “Rudra Yamala Tantra” (chapter 1) it is said:

“It is only through Guru’s grace that a follower of the Truth achieves liberation, one should not deviate from Guru’s order and utter objections. || 224 ||
The Guru's instruction should be kept day and night, and neither in words nor in deeds should a wise person neglect what has been said (by Him). || 225 ||
A one walking should walk without evading from Guru's commands, one should not listen to the Guru's speech with his back turned. || 226 ||
Whoever acts, for good or not for good, deviating from Gurudev’s command, such a fool will go to Raurava Hell. || 227 ||
One who deviates from Guru’s command, offends him and gives trouble to Guru, will find a terrible hell, become a pig. || 228 ||
Whoever commits an offense to Guru, he cannot worship God, neither can he who desires Guru's property, and copulates with Guru's wife. || 229 ||
Such a sin cannot be redeemed by penance, such a sinner must be rejected by Guru with a curse; || 230 ||
In a forest and a deserted place, he will become a brahmarakshasa. Seeing the sandals, seat, clothes, bed and finery of Guru; || 231 ||
One should worship them and not use them for one's own enjoyment.”
