दिग्देवता, digdevatā

The deity-guardian of one or another direction of the world.

There are ten main dig-devatas:

  • Indra is the guardian of the East,

  • Agni — South-east,

  • Yama — South,

  • Surya — South-west,

  • Varuna — West,

  • Vayu — North-west,

  • Kubera — North,

  • Ishana (as well as Soma and Rudra) — North-east,

  • Brahma — Zenith (top),

  • Vishnu — Nadir (bottom).
